Free Things to Do in the Dog Days of Summer

The calendar tells us it’s August, which means that the first day of school is just around the corner. If you’re like lots of Colorado families, you might be looking for ways to make the most of these last dog days of summer. Here are some family-friendly venues to try—and the best part is they’re all free!

  • Hammond’s Candy Factory. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a kid who doesn’t want to tour a candy factory to see how it all gets made, including confections that are hand-pulled, hand-shaped, and hand-twisted. Tours run every 30 minutes Mondays through Saturdays, and participants can leave with a fresh sample to go.
  • National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). NCAR’s visitor center offers exhibits about the earth and its systems, including weather and climate change. Some of the content is best suited for kids in 5th grade or above, although all children are welcome. If you’d prefer to check it out from the comfort of your own home, the center offers virtual tours, either self-guided or live.
  • Louisville Historical Museum. Discover the history of Louisville by touring through three preserved historic buildings downtown. Or try “History at Home,” which includes online, interactive topics such as old-time music and stories from the Marshall Fire of 2021. Or choose a self-paced driving tour through Louisville to see past and present landmarks and understand the history of this blossoming town.
  • Heritage Lakewood. Right near the Belmar district of Lakewood at 801 S. Yarrow street is a beautiful history park and museum. There you can explore 15 historic buildings, as well as permanent and rotating museum exhibits.
  • Colorado Music Hall of Fame. If your family is a bunch of music buffs, you won’t be disappointed in a trip to Red Rocks to tour the Music Hall of Fame. Here you can learn about the talented performers who shaped Colorado’s music history, including John Denver and Dan Fogelberg.
  • Aurora History Museum. Here you’ll be able to see Trolley Trailer No. 610, a fully restored historic trolley trailer car from 1913, as well as photo galleries of various moments in Aurora’s history.
  • Carousel of Happiness (August 12 and 13 are free ride days). Enjoy the cooler temps of slightly higher elevations by heading up to Nederland. You’ll find plenty of family-friendly hiking, and you can always stop by the Carousel of Happiness for a fun, smile-inducing ride ($3 per ride if it’s not a free ride day).

No matter your focus, there’s still plenty of fun to be had before summer waves its hot good-bye. Get it all in while you can!
