Understanding IRAs and Your Options

If you’ve been thinking about saving for your post-retirement years, you should understand your options and their benefits. For example, an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) is one way you can individually prepare for your golden years. With an IRA come several benefits as well as some rules to understand. Here are some basics regarding typical IRAs.

To start, an IRA is essentially a way to save for the future while enjoying tax breaks. With a traditional IRA, you can invest your earnings without paying taxes on them; you pay taxes only when you withdraw from the account. Deferring your taxes means that things like dividends and interest can compound much more quickly in the traditional IRA versus in a taxable account. With a Roth IRA, you pay taxes on your earnings before you invest; however, you won’t pay taxes on any funds you withdraw from the account after you reach retirement age.

Commonly, you can open an IRA on your own—in other words, you don’t have to have your employer open it as you would a 401(k). Be aware that IRAs have yearly investment caps. For example, if you’re younger than 50, in 2019 you can’t invest more than $6,000. Also, with a traditional IRA, you won’t be able to access the funds without penalty until you’re 59½ years old. (With a Roth IRA, you can withdraw the same amount you’ve deposited any time before you reach 59½; however, any earnings on the investment [interest, for example] can’t be withdrawn without a tax hit until after you’re 59½.) Finally, some restrictions apply to opening an IRA, so you might not be eligible. Be sure to speak with a knowledgeable tax attorney about all of the details and to determine whether an IRA is right for you.
